Sunday Indoor Volleyball

Who Should Play

This Meetup is and has been intended for BB or better players with significant experience playing competitive, organized volleyball before. If you don't know your skill level, please scroll down and click the link.

This provision is in place to maintain a high level of play, and to prevent injury, which can be caused when a player or players do not have appropriate court awareness. If one of the organizers deems that you do not meet the minimum skill requirement, you will likely be asked to hone your skills elsewhere, and you will be refunded. Thanks for understanding.

Format: We play co-ed sixes (attendance permitting) with rally scoring on men's height nets. The first 30 minutes of the 9 AM session is set-up and warm-up. At 930, we will split up attendees into four teams of 4-6 players. Each team will play three games, after which we will re-number. We are usually able to get in 5-6 full games per session. The last few minutes of the 11 AM session is tear-down. Everyone is expected to help out.

Attendance/Showing up on time and staying the full length of the Meetup: We understand that life and traffic are unpredictable. We are lucky to have a popular Meetup with a lot of great members who want to participate. It is not fair to them to show up late or leave early to these Meetups. If you have RSVP'd, we expect that you will show up on time and be ready to play within the first 30 minutes. We expect that you will stay through the entire Meetup unless you become injured, sick, or are otherwise unable to continue. Those that do not show up on time or leave early will be marked as a "No Show". Two No Shows in the same quarter and the member will be removed from the Meetup and allowed to join the following quarter.

Please RSVP: (sign up!!) on the Meetup if you want to play. If we are maxed out on the meetup, join the waitlist. If someone cancels their RSVP, those on the waitlist will automatically be added based on the time they RSVP'd for the Meetup. If you live in the area you can take a chance and show up without a spot. If you do, please let me or the other organizer know that you are not on the list for the day. You can play for free until the last person who RSVP'd shows up. If someone no shows and you get to play the whole time then it will be $6. If multiple people show up without a spot the first person to show up gets priority to play (that way if there is a no show and they pay they will be getting their money's worth).

RSVP Deadlines: If you can't make it, change your RSVP NO LATER THAN 2 days prior to the Meetup at 5PM (Sunday would be Friday by 5pm). If you change to a "No" by the deadline, you are off the hook. If you miss the deadline and nobody takes your spot, I have to charge you anyway. (If someone does fill in for your spot, you will not be charged.) If you no show, you still owe the money and you risk being kicked off this Meetup.

Cost/Payment: $6.00 per person per session (PayPal only for first timers). This covers the session gym rental fee, plus weekly custodial fees. Payment is generally collected at the changeover between the 9 AM and 11 AM sessions.

Newbies: If you are paying via PayPal, send payment to fairfaxvolleyballmeetup at gmail.com. Please leave your name and the meetup date as a note on Paypal. If you no show without payment, you are automatically kicked out of this Meetup. If you haven't pre-paid by 8 PM the Saturday before teh Meetup, I reserve the right to remove you for that session and add the first person on the waitlist.

Regulars: After you've been out to play, we prefer to be paid exact cash. When you attend, please pay me or the assistant organizer $6 cash or $12 for both sessions. Please bring payment to us when we are collecting. Small bills are very much appreciated.

Any questions, please email the organizers at: fairfaxvolleyballmeetup at gmail.com

Fairfax Volleyball Meetup Rules

Keep it friendly out there. We have a good time, and once you've been around awhile, expect some of your friends to engage in some good-natured joking around. It is all meant to keep the mood light. If you have a thin skin, you may be uncomfortable.

Volleyball is a team sport. If you're having an off day (and most of us will), keep up a good attitude and try not to bring everyone else around you down. If you're not giving your all because you missed a couple hits or serves, it affects everyone on your team.

We have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for any sort of verbal or physical abuse toward anyone for any reason. If you violate this policy, you will be immediately required to leave the premises, and you will forever lose the privilege of playing in any Fairfax Volleyball Meetup event. To be clear, the only physical contact that is permitted is high-fives and fist-bumps.

There is usually music playing throughout the morning. The musical genres range from classic rock and hair metal to pop/Top 40 and country. We fully understand that not everyone shares the same tastes in music. Unfortunately, we just don't have the money for a DJ, so if something comes on that you don't like, keep it to yourself. We try to keep it kid friendly, but every now and again, a naughty word may pop in. If you REALLY NEED TO, you can approach Josh outside of play and put in a request for the FOLLOWING week. He will try to accommodate.

PLEASE, if you've been out heavy drinking the night before, or for some odd reason decided not to shower up after finishing up the yardwork on Saturday, please do your friends a favor and suds up before you come out.

Many members have young children. Kids are awesome and are welcome to come along with you if that's what you need to make it out. If your kids come out, please have them sit in one of the three alcoves behind each court. There is free WiFi at RRMS, so they will be able to use their electronics. It's okay if they come out onto the court between games, but they must immediately go back to the alcove areas once play resumes. We have some REALLY strong hitters, and the ball can come off their hands pretty hard. SAFETY FIRST! If your kids become a distraction, this privilege may be rescinded.

Our janitorial staff is pretty good about staying quiet about our eating in the gym. However, you are fully expected to leave the gym with everything you brought in with you, and to throw out all refuse. If you spill, you clean it. We are all adults. Let's act like it.

-------------------------------

All games are rally scoring to 25.

If you hit the roof on your side, it's still in play, provided it was not going over the net or the third hit. If it goes over, it's the other team's point.

Side and back walls are dead.

If the ball hits the center divider right above the net and it was not on a trajectory to go over the net, the ball is live. If it hits the net and goes over, the ball is dead and it's a point for the other team.

Service lets are okay.

If any part of your body touches the net, it's a dead ball. This is self-policed, so please be honest.

Foot fault equals lost serve/point for the other team. Same for a bad toss, if you contact the ball after the toss.

Games must be won by 2 points, with a cap at 27.

Skill Levels:

If you are not an Open/AA, A, or BB player, this Meetup is not for you. If you don't know what this means, please visit: http://fairfaxvolleyball.com/2013/10/27/what-does-aa-a-bb-b-mean/ . If you think you might be close to meeting these criteria, feel free to come watch the week before you intend to RSVP. You'll get a really good feel as to what is expected simply by showing up. There are numerous stories of members that have started off as borderline B players that have made significant advances in skill level. Don't give up. If you'd like help with a particular skill, please find one of the more advanced players between games and ask. One of the best things about our Meetup is that everyone is really very kind.

GYM Cancellations:

The inclement weather hotline number is :[masked]-5264. The Web Site to check is http://www.fcps.edu/news/emerg.shtml Check the Meetup for updates and your email. If the schools are closed and you have pre-paid, I'll hold your money for the next time you play. When the schools are closed for scheduled holidays or for weather, we are often able to find an alternate location. If you wake up early and the ground is covered with snow, that doesn't necessarily mean we are cancelled.
