• What we'll do
Roan Mountain is situated right in the heart of the Appalachian Trail and it has been said that the most spectacular views of the whole trail is on Roan Mountain. Luckily for us, we don't have to hike many miles to enjoy the view, in fact, from the parking lot to our camping site it's a little over 3 miles. There's many reasons to visit Roan, but at this particular time it's all about the wild Rhododendrons growing on the mountain side. The other wild card is the weather, which is quite unpredictable at anytime, but also this type of weather present many great photo opportunities! This is a backpacking trip, you'll have to carry your food, water, tent, sleeping bag, camera gear etc, but this is one trip that can be manage very easily. Since we'll be transversing back and forth between the parking lot and campsite, you'll have plenty of opportunities to load up on supplies, so there is no need to be heavy loaded on your first night out. Roan is a fun place for those who never backpack before, in fact, it was my first place too! And as photographers, you'll enjoy the days and also the night sky too!

And here is the BONUS..June 13th we have a new moon so we'll be able to do some milky way shots, timelapses with our tents lit up. Should be a great time for everyone!

You can get a little glimpse of Roan from this video I made from my last trip with David and his wife Lily.

We will meet at Centreville Park n Ride at 7 AM to setup car pooling arrangements. The address is
6168 Early Autumn Dr, Centreville, VA 20120.

• What to bring
You'll need at least a 35L backpack, tent, sleeping bag, food, 2L water container, head lamp, sunscreen, hat, rain gear, warm layered clothing, etc. When it get closer to time, we can have a Skype video chat to discuss all the necessities to make this an enjoyable trip for everyone. Please be aware that backpacking and photography is a challenge for anyone, the less gear you have the lighter and happier you'll be.

• Important to know
This is a free event open to all, but unfortunately we'll need a max limit of people too. You are not required to stay the whole time and if you decide to come only for the weekend, then we can make arrangements how and where to meet. However, I would highly suggest we all come as a group.
